Barrett Browning opens this letter by confirming the date of Miss Mitford’s visit. She asks whether Soulie’s ‘Confession Generale’ was ever finished. She tells Miss Mitford not to be ‘vexed’ with Mr Hunter. She relates a review that mentions her in connection with George Sand and Mr Hunter’s reaction: ‘An honorable thing this is, to be sure, to have one’s name bandied about in connection with an abandoned woman, by all the rakes in London!’. She says this reaction makes her want to both laugh and cry. Nonetheless she tells Miss Mitford not to mind Mr Hunter when she visits for he cannot be ‘blamed for his man-nature'. She says he hates America ever since they have begun to praise her poetry there. She asks whether Miss Mitford is familiar with the memoir ‘Napoléon et Marie Louise; souvenirs historiques’ (1844–45) by Claude François de Méneval and gives her opinion on Marie Louise. Barrett Browning says her health is much better. She mentions Sydney Smith’s death and sends a letter of Richard Henry Horne’s onto Miss Mitford. She then briefly discusses children’s books and criticises Miss Howitt’s inability to write prose.
