In this letter, Barrett Browning writes that her son Penini ‘is under medical treatment for a slight disorder of the stomach’. She describes his condition, the treatment and medical advice, and that Pen is quite recovered in spirits now. She says they went to Mr. Marsh’s, the American ex minister at Constantinople, which she cites as proof that Sarianna need not to be too anxious about Pen’s condition.

She says she yearns to be away from Rome and its climate. She states their present travel plan: go to Florence then Marseilles. She says she will ‘be delighted to spend next winter’ in Paris, briefly discusses living arrangements and says if they go to England it will be in early July. They will take Ferdinando with them as Pen ‘has a complete passion’ for him. She praises Ferdinando: ‘The man is honest, warm-hearted, admirably well-conducted in his general conduct, an excellent cook … and a protestant’. She also discusses what they pay Ferdinando compared to a previous domestic worker and sends her love to the Thackeray girls who she calls her ‘great favourites’.

This is a fragment of a letter. The first part is held by Lilly Library. A transcript of this letter is available online via The Brownings' Correspondence Project numbered 3394.
