In this letter Barrett Browning says that her son 'Pen' has been ill with ‘gastric fever’. She recounts how he fell ill after a trip to the mountains with ‘some American friends (the Eckleys—did you hear of them in Rome?)’. The following day he fell ill. His illness was the same as Robert Lytton’s fever though not as severe. 'Pen' is still confined to bed and on a sickbed diet. Lily Wilson had to leave and they were joined by a new maid Annunciata. Barrett Browning says they will probably spend the winter in Rome or Naples but she is not sure yet. She says she’s seen a lot of Annette Bracken and likes her better. Barrett Browning also says she has not cooled about the spirits. She will be glad when Haworth has left Geneva and is sorry about Haworth's pet dog Romano.
