Barrett Browning says that Robert Browning is envious of Haworth's interview with the opera signer Giuditta Pasta. Major Charles Gregory has invited the medium Daniel Douglas Hume. She says they are leaving off Egypt for the year but still planning to go to Rome. Regarding Mr. Spicer, she asks, ‘To think of Mr Spicer’s going to India! In what capacity, pray? As a fighter? or in search of a sensation simply? aspiring to having both ears cut off by a sepoy.?’ This may be in reference to stories that appeared in the English press regarding the Indian Mutiny, for example: “At Allahabad, the mob and soldiery burned a whole family alive—three generations of Englishmen—grandfather, father and mother, and children.
