<value>This is a letter written from Tuscany, Italy. In this letter Barrett Browning mentions possible accommodation for Haworth in Venice and the fact that 'Peni' is better. She says they (the Brownings) will go to Rome at the end of November. Barrett Browning is sorry to hear that Haworth is not well and asks whether Haworth was better in Switzerland than in Italy. Barrett Browning says that Robert Browning is envious of Haworth's interview with the opera signer Giuditta Pasta. Major Charles Gregory has invited the medium Daniel Douglas Hume. She says they are leaving off Egypt for the year but still planning to go to Rome.

Regarding Mr. Spicer, she asks, ‘To think of Mr Spicer’s going to India! In what capacity, pray? As a fighter? or in search of a sensation simply? aspiring to having both ears cut off by a sepoy.?’ This may be in reference to stories that appeared in the English press regarding the Indian Mutiny, for example: “At Allahabad, the mob and soldiery burned a whole family alive—three generations of Englishmen—grandfather, father and mother, and children. They killed another family literally by inches, cutting off their noses, ears, fingers, and toes”, The Illustrated London News, August 1857, referenced in Andrea Kaston Tange's 'Picturing the Villain: Image-Making and the Indian Uprising'.

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 24, p 194–196. (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2016). It is transcribed online via The Brownings' Correspondence project, numbered 4083.</value>
