In this letter Barrett Browning says that Robert Browning has gone to Philipson’s to see if he can ‘relieve’ FH. Pen is much better. Barrett Browning says that Italy appears to be ‘disagreeing’ with Haworth. She says their own travel plans are not definite. Mrs Jameson has Haworth’s old rooms and complains of them ‘incessantly’.

The 'villa party, augmented by Lytton' (referring to Annette Bracken and Isa Blagden) get along well and they visited to meet the younger Trollopes. She gives news of Blagden and Bracken. Barrett Browning is learning German, hearing Pen’s lessons and enjoying more leisure time than she has in a long time. She asks whether Haworth knows that Mrs Le Vert’s book is out (Souvenirs of Travel). Mrs Newton Crosland is in Florence chaperoning a young lady to whom she has promised never to speak of the spirits.

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 24, p 201–202.
