In this letter, Barrett Browning seems to clear up some misperception of Haworth’s. She says they sent Haworth a Shakespeare because that is what they had. During a trip to the theatre, Robert Browning saw Haworth because Isa Blagden showed him where she was with Madame de Smidt. They knew too late that Haworth had her own box otherwise Browning would have asked to take a place in his, ‘Isa Blagden was a little precipitate in fancying that I shd be afraid of your meeting Robert in the theatre– Of course I was not so absurd .. however absurd I may be actually’. Barrett Browning tells Haworth not to ‘torment’ herself with ‘foolish fancies’. Of her own health, Barrett Browning says she is not well but ‘feverish and weak’ and also suffering from some eye inflammation that has now ‘diminished’.
