<value>This is a letter written from Le Havre, France. In this letter, Barrett Browning writes 'It sounds pathetical' that Elizabeth Wilson should be Haworth's only friend in Florence. Barrett Browning has had a letter from Isa Blagden who has just missed Haworth. Barrett Browning gives a description of their time in Paris. She praises Paris but only wishes there was sun there and that she had no lungs. She loves Italy and Florence. Barrett Browning discusses a ‘spiritual soirée’ at Dr. Wilkinson’s: ‘She heard that Mrs Milner Gibson had seen & touched the hand of her father, so tender in benediction that she had lost some painful sense of alienation from him.’. The Brownings met Father Prout and Charles Sumner in Paris. They also met Lady Elgin who had a stroke when they first arrived in Paris. She asks whether Haworth has heard of the ‘Dickens affair’, referring to Charles Dickens leaving his wife Catherine Dickens. She also mentions Lady Lytton leaving the ‘madhouse’. Her in-laws, Sarianna Browning and Robert Browning Sr are in an apartment in their house.

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 25, p. 180–183. (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2017). It is transcribed online via The Brownings' Correspondence project, numbered 4217.</value>
