<value>This is a letter written from Siena, Italy. In this letter, Barrett Browning says she has ‘been very ill’ and even now is still regaining strength. She blames the political situation (‘all those selfish & inhuman nations’ she believes ‘forced [the] hand’ of the Emperor) and tells Haworth ‘never speak to me again of England’. The political turmoil in addition to the weather worsened her health. However just as she was ready to bid ‘farewell to this world’ she recovered. They are now in Siena and she is improving as are public affairs. She talks of their future travel plans and that their winter will be spent either at Rome or Florence. She praises Haworth’s writing in Chambers which she has read, however says she pities Haworth ‘desolately wandering about Germany’.

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 26, pp. 256–258. (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2019). It is transcribed online via The Brownings' Correspondence project, numbered 4471.</value>
