<value>This is a letter written from Rome, Italy. In this letter, Barrett Browning comments on Mr. Scammon. She says that Pen is enjoying the pony, learning music and Latin. One of the Story children will also be instructed. Pen asks why Barrett Browning cannot teach him but Robert Browning thinks it is better if she does not, ‘and I must’nt give up my own work & life in art quite, for what another can do perhaps better than I’. She asks how Haworth gets on in the galleries and what pictures she is working on. She says Mr and Mrs Cartwright are in Rome so Robert Browning is a little happier.

The political situation is quite different from last year. The Atlantic Monthly and Thackeray on behalf of Cornhill have written asking for poems. Robert Browning is averse and will likely remain so. Barrett Browning asks whether Haworth has tried Chambers again and that one of her stories has been published in America. She then turns to the subject of spiritualism: Mrs Crowe’s book and whether Haworth has heard anything of Daniel Douglas Hume. She knows Theodore Parker does not believe in the spirits being an ‘off shoot of Kant’s mind’ nonetheless she prefers American sceptics to English sceptics. She cannot find subjects for Haworth out of Idylls of the King. She also comments 'Work, work, work—it is the secret of happiness. Anything that calls off this poor me from this poor me– Anything that raises us from this wretched mud into the clean sphere of abstract thought’. This is an incomplete letter; the remainder is held by Scripps College.

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 27, pp. 70–72. (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2020). It is transcribed online via The Brownings' Correspondence project, numbered 4540.</value>
