<value>This is a letter written from Rome, Italy. In this letter, Barrett Browning says that she has been ill again. She was taken in a shut carriage to see a presentation of swords for Napolean III and Victor Emmanuel before it was cleared away. She and Robert Browning were celebrated greatly as poets and lovers of Italy. Barrett Browning is better now though she has been warned off Florence in winter. She is meeting Theodore Parker (who believes nothing) and ‘Mr Hazard, a spiritualist, who believes everything’. She says she is writing a brochure of political poems for the Emperor and expects ‘to be torn to pieces in England’ for her writing. Haworth is safer out of Italy and they expect more turbulence. She says that there is no Roman news and they ‘think of little but politics’.

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 27, pp. 179–182. (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2020). It is transcribed online via The Brownings' Correspondence project, numbered 4603.</value>
