<value>This is a letter written from Florence, Italy. In this letter, Barrett Browning sends photographs of Peni to Haworth and says the Indian poet’s letter has been dispatched. Barrett Browning does not want to give feedback on others’ poetry, She discusses the political situation in Italy. She says 'no mortal harm' has been done by the Congress poems which are likely to go to a second edition and Aurora Leigh is in its 5th edition.

Barrett Browning also discusses their journey from Rome to Florence which fatigued her. She says she is not so strong since her last illness. She also discusses Pen and his tutor and spiritualism: ‘here is even Robert whose heart softens to the point of letting me have the Spiritual Magazine from England’, I hear through Mr Trollope & Chapman that Edwin Landseer has received the faith & did everything possible to persuade Dickens to investigate——which Dickens refused– Afraid of the truth, of course, having deeply committed himself to negatives– This is a moral lâchetè [cowardice] hard for my feminine mind to conceive of. Dickens too, who is so fond of ghost-stories, as long as they are impossible.!’. She asks if Haworth has been writing stories. Isa Blagden brought her a few stories. She mentions the change in currency, Mr Spicer and anticipates a struggle in Italy in the summer.

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 28, pp. 44–47. (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2022). It is transcribed online via The Brownings' Correspondence project, numbered 4691.</value>
