In this letter, Barrett Browning thanks Haworth for her sympathy. She says the first thing to do her good was a letter from Harriet Beecher Stowe who knew nothing of her private troubles. Stowe wrote to her of public events (neither Barrett Browning nor Stowe having written since they last parted) and described a spirit encounter she had had. Barrett Browning praises Stowe's outlook on spiritualism and religion.\n\nBarrett Browning says single women are better off in England than the continent. According to her, most English women have a hankering to go back (even Isa Blagden, of whom Barrett Browning says 'There is even Isa Blagden who will end by going back though many reasons are plainly against it\u2014health chiefly'). She discusses the prices and condition of living in various cities such as Paris, Florence, and Rome. Of themselves, Barrett Browning says they seem destined to live a \u2018tent life\u2019. She does not have much news of Rome to share. Sir John Bowring has visited as has Madame Swab. She predicts that war is likely and mentions others she has met in Rome such as the Eckleys. Robert Browning has taken to modelling under Mr Story and makes good progress. He goes out in the evenings and she goes to sleep early. She is happy he has some diversion which he did not have in Florence. Of herself, she says: 'I am weak & languid. I struggle hard to live on.
