There appears to be some disagreement between Barrett Browning and Haworth over religion, spiritualism, Swedenborg and Beecher Stowe (whose mind Fanny regards as ‘corrupting’) which Barrett Browning attempts to clarify at the beginning of the letter. Barrett Browning seems to be apprehensive about travelling. She would send Robert Browning with Pen alone but he would insist otherwise and she must also meet her sister Arabel. She says they will be back in Rome next winter and that the climate lengthens her life. She says there is no quarrel with Sophia Eckley but as she has lost her esteem for her she cannot retain her affection. She warns Haworth to beware of English periodicals. Of the United States, she says: 'I am anxious about America—fearing a compromise in the North. All other dangers are comparatively null–'.
