<value>This is a letter written from Florence, Italy. Barrett Browning begins this letter asking about Blagden’s Rome address and commenting on Charlotte Agassiz ('Is there not a mystery in the affair of Charlotte Agassiz? Do you not suppose (as we are not in heaven yet) that there’s some marrying & giving in marriage?'). She congratulates Blagden and Louisa on Louisa’s progress, and praises Blagden’s selflessness.

Barrett Browning discusses the requirements of what rooms they would need in Rome, mentioning that Pen sleeps with her maid Elizabeth Wilson. She commiserates with Geraldine Macpherson over loss of her child. She discusses others in the same social circles and says she gets dizzy spells in company: Mrs Sartoris, Fanny Kemble, Miss Cushman and Miss Hayes. She wants to hear more about mediums and spiritualism. She doesn’t believe Charles Dickens’ misproving a medium in Household Words. She says that Blagden’s ‘beautiful American witch’ didn’t visit them to Barrett Browning's disappointment. She is reading Swedenbourg. The actress Mrs Martin nee Faucit wishes to play Colombe in Robert Browning’s play.

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 18, p. 333–335 (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2010). It is transcribed online via The Brownings' Correspondence project, numbered 3168.</value>
