<value>This is a letter written from Florence, Italy. Barrett Browning asks Blagden about apartments in Rome and says they have been frightened by the what they have heard of the ‘dearness’ of Rome prices. They missed Mr Thompson in Florence but hope to see him in Rome. They also received a card from Miss Lynch an ‘American poetess’. She says ‘Florence is full of great people, so called, from England’. Alfred Tennyson is coming. Charles Dickens and William Makepeace Thackeray are to go to Rome in the winter.

There is further commentary on Robert Lytton whom she praises. His father is coming out with a poetry collection Cornflowers. She discusses her reading of Swedenbourg. They have heard ‘‘Trovatore,’ Verdi’s new work. Very passionate & dramatic, surely’. There is a mention of the Storys and her desire to ‘convert’ Blagden (who dislikes Mrs Story). Pen wants to go to Rome. In postscript, she writes: ‘If Charlotte Agassiz does not stay in England to be married, bona fide, her conduct is inexplicable. Yes, I know Mr Westwood—that is by correspondence—not personally.’

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 19, p. 321–323 (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2012). It is transcribed online via The Brownings' Correspondence project, numbered 3277.</value>
