Barrett Browning advises Blagden on leasing a house in Leghorn (‘you must do & ought to do precisely what you please & think best’). She makes reference to ‘unhealthy quarters’ and ‘cholera’ and says that Annette Black ‘is very anxious’ to get Blagden to Leghorn ‘where you will spend a dull winter without books or friends. Mr Cassels tells me that the dulness of the place is dreadful’. Barrett Browning says it is difficult ‘to persuade’ them that Louisa ‘who looks so much better than she did last year at this time’ should leave Florence but Blagden knows her ‘more intimately & accurately’ than the Brownings do. Blagden will also give up the physician Ferdinando Zannetti (1801–81) (a Florentine physician, who had correctly diagnosed Isa’s knee problem) if she goes. She asks if Blagden will come back to tea ‘to meet Capt Aidè’ and thanks her for ‘Virginia’s letter’.
