Barrett Browning thanks Blagden for all her ‘goodness’ towards herself. She says ‘the papers are very welcome’ and that the last batch has been returned to her ‘instantly’. Blagden appears to be unwell and Barrett Browning says ‘You really cant keep your hands (or knees) from self-destruction!’. Barrett Browning hopes to meet Blagden soon and says she is ‘getting through’ her own bout of weakness and illness. She notes she has Les Mystères de Paris (5 vols., 1842–43), a novel by Eugène Sue. Though it is a struggle she tries to work on her poem in the mornings. Robert Browning is ‘frantic about the Crimea’ and she makes further comments on the war and the British Army policy of commission and promotion. She says she is pleased to have ‘good news of dear Louisa’ from Robert Browning.
