Barrett Browning says Pen has been ill with ‘gastric fever’ after a trip to Gallicano: ‘the fever comes on at night .. just like Lytton’s .. only much more lightly, we do thankfully confess’. The doctor says it is not grave however, tells of an accident Robert Browning had on horseback ‘climb[ing] the great mountain peak’. Luckily both were relatively unharmed. Elizabeth Wilson is going to Florence and the new maid Annunziata Lena has begun. She asks Blagden to thank Lytton for ‘his most kind & welcome letter’. She makes further comments on Pen and also says ‘Lytton seems, from his own account, to be gaining strength, & I do hope it is more & more so with him’. Robert Browning sends his love to Blagden, Lytton and Annette Bracken.

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 24, pp. 145–147 (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2016).
