Barrett Browning says Pen is recovering from illness and on a strict diet by doctor’s orders which Barrett Browning does not dare deviate from. She congratulates Robert Lytton and Blagden on Lytton’s recovery and sends her love to him. Elizabeth Wilson has left for Florence and the new domestic workers look after Pen. There are cases of fever in Florence but the air is dryer and she is eager to return to Florence. Mrs Jameson has gone to Barga. She is not sure when they will be able to leave for Florence due to Pen’s illness and weakness. The owner of the horse is trying to get money from Robert Browning for his fall from the horse. Barrett Browning blames the guide. She is sorry to hear of Annette’s rheumatic suffering. Robert Browning only has her for a model and has a produced a close likeness. She reassures Blagden she does not need to come to her.

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 24, pp. 156–159 (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2016).
