Barrett Browning says she cannot express her ‘astonishment at the infinite degree of bad taste of the letter you enclosed to me’ (presumably a letter from Robert Lytton; Lytton had sent some photographs to the Brownings which ‘had quite softened’ Barrett Browning towards him, but now her ‘anger is up again’). She complains that the letter shows ‘a want of feeling’ and she is ‘deeply disappointed in Lytton’. She asks whether Blagden can forgive the groom Pippo due to his forgetting the time. Peni has said Blagden is not well. Barrett Browning advises: ‘Throw off this dust, & remember there is blue sky above you.’ (Context from the Brownings' Correspondence project: At the end of December, Lytton moved from Isa Blagden’s villa to the centre of Florence, occupying rooms in the house of the banker Leone Finzi. In the 1 January 1858 section of a letter to John Forster, Lytton reported that he had relocated due to the “encreasing cold of winter, and the return of bad symptoms in the throat” (see SD2127 in vol. 24). He remained in Florence, in the Finzi household, until 8 March 1858. Evidently, Barrett Browning and Blagden considered the manner of his departure from Villa Brichieri abrupt and ungrateful.)

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 25, pp. 1–2 (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2016).
