Barrett Browning says that Blagden is ‘too good & too generous’ and suffers as a result. Barrett Browning refers to her own ‘sense of humiliation’ that she has not been able to save Blagden from anything (this is a possible reference to their shared ongoing disappointment with Lytton). Barrett Browning has told Robert Browning that ‘Annette was going back’. She thanks Blagden for the roses but ‘they look too pathetic to me just now - too much out of season in all senses’. She says that Blagden stands on ‘high ground’ and wants reassurance that Blagden loves her despite ‘these thorns’. She says ‘Tables move– Why should’nt hearts? They will, dearest Isa. I know they will.’. She mentions that the Du Qaires visited and Barrett Browning says her cold ‘has drawn the life out of [her]’. She advises that Annette should not go out in this weather. Barrett Browning will not meet Mrs Kinney until the weather improves and Robert Browning ‘is much better’.
