Barrett Browning mentions not being able to find Madeline Smith (from the Brownings' Correspondence project: the woman charged with poisoning her suitor, presumably she is searching for an account of this). She asks Blagden to send her the next number of Thackeray (The Virginians). She never had it back which will vex the Perkins, who met Thackeray in ‘53. She makes reference to Robert Bulwer Lytton being ‘back’ but she doesn’t wish to know the details. Mrs Jameson says Blagden is unwell. Pen has had a music lesson and is getting on well whereas Barrett Browning is not. She returns a poem from Mrs Jameson that she liked (this poem is untraced). This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 25, p. 43–44 (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2017).
