Barrett Browning says they left Paris and have come to Etretat, which they expected to like more than they have. She describes their fruitless search for accommodation and that they eventually 'decided on coming away to this great honest ugly commercial Havre where we have fallen into a roomy house in a small green garden close to the sea'. She describes their life in Havre, including their domestic help, Pen's swimming and her and Robert Browning's bathing. Of her siblings, she says, 'Arabel & George are coming, they say, in about a fortnight, & Arabel half promises to return with us to Paris “for a few days–”'. She asks how Blagden is and of Robert Bulwer-Lytton says, 'Dear Isa, did you like that letter of Lytton’s about his father & mother? I did not, I own to you– One must be just & admit that it was a difficult letter to write—but when all’s admitted, still I do not like it.' She makes references to Rosina Bulwer-Lytton and her incarceration in an asylum. She ends the letter saying she yearns for Italy and warm weather and asks after their mutual friends and acquaintances in Italy.
