Barrett Browning offers her condolences following the death of 19-year-old Louisa Alexander which is the sorry news that Blagden has received from India. Villa Bricchieri is apparently to be given up and Blagden seems torn on what to do next: whether to go to Madrid or act as some kind of governess and companion to Miss Cobbe her children in England. Barrett Browning encourages her to put her focus on her literary work and continue with her novel saying ‘It’s quite an illusion the going to England in order to print books’. She encourages Blagden to take heart and not look at others enviably as she does not know their secret griefs. Barrett Browning describes their accommodation in Paris but says they will not stay till winter. They will return to Florence. She asks whether Lytton is in Florence with his mother and asks whether Isa would prefer to be herself or Mrs Dickens ‘with husband & children turning round on her like serpents’ in reference to Catherine Dickens. She also says ‘As to Landor, you are tender. He has acted atrociously, it seems to me’.

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 25, pp. 240–243 (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2017).
