Barrett Browning says Blagden’s letter was very interesting. She behaved in a very dignified and characteristic manner during ‘that interview’ according to the Browning. She encourages Blagden to come to Rome and she has apparently promised Miss Cushman as well. Barrett Browning describes the weather in Rome. Pen had a ‘bad cold’ but is much recovered. She says she likes Rome better than the last time and has not heard too much of others falling in, except for the Hawthornes who ‘suffer seriously’. Pen has been reading a translation of Monte Cristo and has expressed his desire to start reading novels beginning with Dumas and including his father’s favourite Madame Bovary. She describes some of the others who are also in Rome: Mr Page who has a baby, Mrs Macpherson, Mr Motley, Miss Ogle, Mr Hooker and Mr Thompson have been remembering Blagden. Fanny Haworth and Miss Eaton are to arrive but have yet to do so. Barrett Browning wants Blagden to get to know Sophia Eckley better and like her. Eckley too sees no reason for ‘coldness’ between them and wants it to be otherwise when they are both in Florence.
