<value>This is a letter written from Rome, Italy. Barrett Browning says she and Robert Browning sent a letter for Blagden that is wandering around Madrid. She praises Blagden as always being very good to her. She says Blagden has not had a holiday in Madrid so she does not begrudge for resting in Florence rather than visiting them in Rome. Blagden is mistaken if she thinks Barrett Browning has changed her opinion of Rome. She thinks Rome is the most ‘dissipated of watering holes’. Robert Browning has been very busy and sociable and has not done much writing. Talfourd has produced a portrait-picture of Barrett Browning in chalk that she is very pleased with. She agrees with Blagden regarding Annette’s decision (presumably not to live in Florence any longer): ‘Never consider me again as an English-woman, Isa– I am done with England’. She discusses the political situation in Italy and provides updates on mutual friends such as the Hawthornes, Hatty (Harriet Hosmer), etc.. Regarding Sophia Eckley, she says ‘Mrs Eckley was here yesterday, & told me to offer you her regards. I shall talk to you some day about her, & explain her to you, & teach you to love her– “This is A, this is B,[”] and so on–’. She asks whether Lytton sent Blagden his book: ‘There is no reference to you in the book precise enough to strike one–’. In Robert Browning’s portion of the letter, he discusses Lytton’s book and Annette going away to Naples.

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 26, pp. 77–81 (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2019). It is transcribed online via The Brownings' Correspondence project, numbered 4351.</value>
