<value>This is a letter written from Rome, Italy. Barrett Browning thanks Blagden for the news and reflects on Italian political situation. She comments on the reactions in newspapers. Despite what others say and her own ‘distrust’ of England, she cannot believe England will ‘enter openly into a war against France & Italy, taking sides with Austria in the field’. She would like Blagden and Mr Trollope to read La foi des traités, les puissances signataires et l’empereur Napoleon III (1859). In terms of the Brownings' travel she says they ‘go straight to our Florence—setting out on the 24th or 5th & travelling the shortest way by Sienna’. According to the Athenæum they have ‘vexed’ ‘Jessie White & her American friends’. White has written a very insulting letter. Barrett Browning refers to Kate Field staying with Blagden and says that the Brackens will also go to Florence.

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 26, pp. 143–146 (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2019). It is transcribed online via The Brownings' Correspondence project, numbered 4402.</value>
