<value>This is a letter written from Rome, Italy. Barrett Browning says they have reached Rome and describes their journey briefly. They have taken accommodation in Via Tritone close to the Cushmans and the Storys. The Storys have been very kind. Mr Cartwright would have been happy to have them ‘under his roof'. She discusses the political situation and her self-censorship. She also says ‘There’s another ‘tie’ between you & Harold the beloved.’ (a possible reference to Edward Bulwer-Lytton who wrote a novel on 1066). She comments on newspapers. They have been visited by the Hookers, Hetty (Harriet Hosmer) and Mr Page. She thanks Blagden for a gift of certain Victor Hugo works and criticises the use of resident permits for Italians. She asks Blagden to find out if there is a letter waiting for them from Thackeray and also mentions a visit from Theodore Parker.

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 27, pp. 61–66 (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2020). It is transcribed online via The Brownings' Correspondence project, numbered 4536.</value>
