Barrett Browning encourages Blagden to come and visit her. She urges Blagden to have patience with Landor and asks whether Robert Browning’s letter reached her. Barrett Browning expresses her dismay with the English press: ‘The National Defence & rifle movement are maintained by everybody; by all newspapers, by every grade of politicians’. She comments on the Italian political situation and asks whether Blagden knows of the Stones (wealthy Americans). The Stones' eight year old child has died of diptheria which has concerned Barrett Browning who did not think it was present in Italy. She asks Blagden to ask Dr Grisanowsky if he has heard of any cases in Florence. She also urges Blagden to meet Harriet Beecher Stowe. They (the Brownings) are reading Anthony Trollope’s Bertram and are subscribed to Piazza Colonna French library. Pen is going to study with a Jesuit priest including languages and mathematics. Barrett Browning is less at ease when Pen goes out due to his having been thrown from his horse previously. She says people are coming to Rome but they are chiefly Americans and asks whether Blagden knows Theodore Parker.

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 27, pp. 82–85 (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2020).
