<value>This is a letter written from Rome, Italy. Barrett Browning worries that Blagden is unwell and instructs her how to keep warm at Casa Guidi and in Florence. She says it is cold in Rome but not as in Florence. Hatty (Harriet Hosmer) is unwell. Blagden should ‘come & see her & carry her back with you’. Barrett Browning gives advice on Elizabeth Wilson who is ‘a sort of medium’ but has ‘no proportionate personal & intellectual strength’. She also says Wilson is pining for Ferdinando. Barrett Browning says not to send her ‘another person’s letters’ (presumably Sophia Eckley's to Blagden) however Barrett Browning has had a letter from Sophia Eckley.

Barrett Browning says she likes Kate Field for her honesty and her kindness in checking in on Landor. She sends further news of Pen including that his Italian ‘is very much praised’. She is aware of ‘certain diplomatical secrets’ which she cannot share with Blagden though she would like to, gives news of the English diplomats and their dealings with the Emperor. She says that ‘Lord Palmerston’s speech on the Defences & the articles of the Post on Suez—are revolting to me.’. She says she has heard from Arabel. They (the Barretts) have lost an uncle and her sister in law has also lost her mother suddenly. She makes a veiled reference to Sophia Eckley: if Blagden is asked whether Barrett Browning writes, Blagden must not deny it only say that Barrett Browning is a ‘bad correspondent’. Barrett Browning hears that Daniel Douglas Hume and his wife are in London.

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 27, pp. 108–111 (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2020). It is transcribed online via The Brownings' Correspondence project, numbered 4558.</value>
