<value>This is a letter written from Rome, Italy. Barrett Browning says Mrs Stowe has visited and they were grateful. Blagden’s books also came and they were very grateful. She discusses the ‘medium’ (Sophia Eckley) whom she no longer believes. Barrett Browning likes a new medium – Mr Hazard – who even a disbeliever such as Mr Apthorp likes: ‘Mr Hazard says that the notion of the subject dying away, is quite a mistake. All his correspondence from America (& he is devoted to this one subject) assures him of the contrary, precisely’. She discusses the Italian political situation and English political actions. She tells Blagden to ‘come’. She is recovered from an earache. She comments on various books: praises Trollope’s latest and criticises Thackeray’s. Dumas is in France. Robert Browning missed Dumas once but has met him. During this encounter Dumas discussed Italian politics and Robert Browning says Barrett Browning could not have borne it but she demurs: ‘Only he would have been just Dumas to me & not an historiographer.’ Nobody could interrupt Dumas. Dumas is to return to Rome and Barrett Browning would like to meet him but Robert Browning appears ‘abashed’ to extend an invitation.

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 27, pp. 185–189 (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2020). It is transcribed online via The Brownings' Correspondence project, numbered 4607.</value>
