Barrett Browning says that a letter from Charles Fauvety has stemmed her her anxiety: ‘Dall’Ongaro deserves everything from me for his confidence’. She comments on the Italian political situation. The letter changes abruptly when she receives news from Mr Cartwright that Napoleon III has seized Savoy. She writes this must be ‘impossible’. If the news is true it is hard for her to think of much else though she had intended to ask Blagden about Mrs Hawkes and Mazzini. She discusses Chapman and the upcoming publication of Poems Before Congress and its price of sale. She mentions Miss Cobb, the Eckleys and Hetty (Harriet Hosmer). Pen was very charmed by Blagden’s letter and ‘worked hard’ presumably on his reply.
