Barrett Browning comments on the Italian political situation. She agrees with the proposition to get her book to Fauvety. She says she is ‘dishonored before the Athenæum world, as an unnatural vixen, who instead of staying at home & spinning wool, stays at home & curses her own land.’. She says that it would have been acceptable for her to go abroad and criticse other places but never England. She also says that though her verses were not about England some might fit.

Chorley complained about a ‘sarcastic letter’ from Barrett Browning about “Roccabella". She wonders whether his poor review of Poems Before Congress was retaliatory. She says she does not know if her letter was sarcastic but she would have meant ‘kindness personally’ to Chorley. She is more upset by the cold pitiful Athenæum notice of Mrs Jameson’s death. She asks after Frances Perkins and asks whether it is true Sophia Eckley has been ordered by physicians to go to France and England or whether she just needs ‘new scenery’.

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 27, pp. 254–257 (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2020). It is transcribed online via The Brownings' Correspondence project, numbered 4639.
[{"@link":
[{"@link":
