Field told Barrett Browning that ‘Curse of a nation’ will hurt her in America which she also heard when it was first printed yet she says: ‘But let speaking the truth hurt one either here or there, one must speak it, if one is to speak what is worthy’. She asks whether there has been anything particularly ‘vicious’ in the reviews of Poems Before Congress.
