<value>This is a letter written from Rome, Italy. Barrett Browning praises Robert Browning for holding onto their newspaper receipts. She says there are many ‘Tuscan exiles’ in Rome and ‘Monitore is necessary to us’. She comments on the Italian political situation and says she cares ‘less for the attacks of the press on my book’ than for Blagden’s sympathy. She says: ‘Observe, Isa,—if there had been less violence & more generosity, the poems would obviously have been less deserved./The English were not always so thin-skinned'. She points to satires of Byron and Thomas Moore. This is a fragmentary letter that ends: 'Lord Byron & Moore have <***>'

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 27, pp. 273–274 (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2020). It is transcribed online via The Brownings' Correspondence project, numbered 4647.</value>
