<value>This is a letter written from Rome, Italy. Barrett Browning says French troops are leaving Italy. She comments on the political situation including ‘The Roman & French governments are on the worst terms just now’. She mentions of Garibaldi and Cavour, praises Edmond About’s La Nouvelle carte d’Europe (1860) and mentions the possibility of conflict. Of Theodore Parker's death, she says ‘Poor Mr Parker!’. She has been sent a poem from The Re-Burial, or The Grave in Galilee (1860) published anonymously by Thomas Jones (1819–94): ‘Neither poetry nor logic struck me much’.

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 28, pp. 5–8 (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2022). It is transcribed online via The Brownings' Correspondence project, numbered 4670.</value>
