Barrett Browning says they have arrived in Rome. She is shocked to find ‘no letters’ awaiting for them regarding her sister Henrietta. Robert Browning has said it is a ‘good sign’ as her family don’t want to give her ‘dangerous hopes’. She was only able to read Blagden’s letters on the journey as she couldn’t ‘fasten [her] thoughts’ to any of the books she brought with her. The journey was ‘miserable’. They are in a hotel now as they are not satisfied by any of the proposed apartments, Hatty (Harriet Hosmer) is in Rome but Barrett Browning does not wish to meet anybody right now.
