<value>This is a letter written from Rome, Italy. Barrett Browning has been very sick and weak. She asks why Blagden did not go long since to Casa Guidi. Barrett Browning has not seen anyone only Mr Cartwright. She comments on the Italian and French political situation and the Emperor. She dislike Mr Trollope’s ‘Italian paper’ in Cornhill. She criticises Thackeray for allowing ‘amateur friends’ to contribute to Cornhill. She comments on spiritualism and communication with the spirits including an experience from Harriet Beecher Stowe who says ‘that for the fifth time she has had a communication—from her son—unsought on her side’. She is sorry for Sophia Cottrell’s eye-related suffering and asks after the Cottrells. She sends her love to Kate Field who was dealing with money issues and says ‘American politics make me anxious’ (regarding the possibility of civil war).

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 28, pp. 262–265 (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2022). It is transcribed online via The Brownings' Correspondence project, numbered 4805.</value>
