<value>This is a letter written from Rome, Italy. Barrett Browning is ‘anxious’ that Blagden is unwell and urges her to go to Casa Guidi which will be warmer. She encourages her to let Dr Grisonowsky cure her quickly. She has not been well herself however the attack passed quickly: ‘I hope I shall keep from bad attacks, having not much strength in body, nerve, or spirit to bear up resistingly against them–’. She mentions Blagden's veiled references to Blagden's maidservant Emilia who was ‘not well and went home’. Barrett Browning infers this means she was pregnant.

Barrett Browning gives her and Robert Browning’s opinions on a subscription raised after Mrs Jameson’s death. She comments on the discussion of spiritualism in England. John Bowring has been to see them and spoken to them about the ‘panic’ in England over the possibility of invasion. Bowring said that the ‘emperor’s intentions towards Italy had been undeviatingly good’ and ‘the Italian question was only beginning to be understood in England’. She makes further comments on the Italian political situation. They have had a letter from Ruskin who has written in ‘a very desponding state about his work & life & the world’. She asks Blagden for recommendations of French books as Robert Browning has subscribed for her. She has seen and written to Sophia Eckley once. She makes disparaging comments about Eckley and in her postscript expresses her worry for America.

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 28, pp. 281–285 (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2022). It is transcribed online via The Brownings' Correspondence project, numbered 4813.</value>
