    <description>
      <type>content description</type>
      <value>This is a letter written from Rome, Italy. Blagden is unwell, partly as a result of her maidservant being pregnant (&#x2018;poor Emilia with her life torn to rags because one man more is unscrupulous &amp; selfish&#x2019;). Barrett Browning encourages Blagden to go to Casa Guidi. She asks about Mr Trollope&#x2019;s novel (La Beata). She talks about an old work of hers (&#x2018;De Profundis&#x2019;) emerging and explains the context in which it was originally written (following her brother&#x2019;s death). She mentions John Bowring and his wife (Deborah Castle). She has seen Hatty (Harriet Hosmer) once. She refers to photos Robert Browning gave her of the Pope and Antonelli. She also makes reference to Lytton, the burning of the summer palace, hypocrisy of English newspapers, the Marchese and Madame di Torrearsa and Garibaldi. She further comments on the political situation in Italy. She asks what Blagden thinks of Austria. Barrett Browning says Blagden amused her very much with story of Azeglio. Barrett Browning wants to be &#x2018;among the first&#x2019; readers of Blagden&#x2019;s novel but it is unlikely to be brought out just now. In her postscript, she mentions Margaret Elliott and the sudden deaths of the Count de Montemolin and his family.

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 28, pp. 286&#x2013;291 (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2022). It is transcribed online via The Brownings' Correspondence project, numbered 4815.</value>
