<value>This is a letter written from Rome, Italy. Barrett Browning comments on both her and Blagden's respective health. Barrett Browning is ‘pretty well again’ despite being ‘weak’ and ‘the world is heavy with me at times’. She gives her views on the Athenæum on Theodosia Trollope. She says she met Madame Swab (‘She lives in England, though originally a German Jewess—and came over to Italy in a flame of enthusiasm’) and describes Swab’s political opinions. She comments on the Italian political situation. She says they have the Atlantic Monthly where there is an amusing article on Keats by Cowden Clarke, a continuation of Harriet Prescott’s “The Professor’s Story”, and an article on Italy which is ‘not always right, but is more clear of prejudices than usual’. She expresses her surprise that Adelaide Procter’s poetry receives ‘so favorable a reception’ despite its weakness. Monckton Milnes she understands is quite aggrieved by this fact as he cannot sell his books, yet concedes that ‘there is goodness & grace’ in what Procter writes. She goes on to say ‘It would, in fact, be horrible for me to be heard nibbling at another woman’s poems. I would as soon that people said I dyed my hair–’. She comments on various publishers and the bringing forth of Blagden's book. Her concluding comments are regarding Dr Grisonowski.

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 28, pp. 306–311 (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2022). It is transcribed online via The Brownings' Correspondence project, numbered 4823.</value>
