She talks about the Italian political situation and England’s role and makes reference to occupation of Lebanon: ‘There may be however complications in the east– And see how M. Post speaks of Syria.!’. Mr Cartwright is ill whereas Bowring is better. She says that ‘Robert came home this morning between three & four– A great ball at Mrs Hookers’ and that Americans still ‘dance’ even as ‘the Republic goes to pieces’. She and Mr Story disagree on the war – Mr Story is willing let go of the South but Barrett Browning thinks the country should remain intact. She further comments on the likelihood of war in Europe and describes a ‘walking tour into Cornwall’ taken the previous year by Mr Prinsep and Alfred Tennyson.
