<value>This is a letter written from Rome, Italy. Barrett Browning comments on the Italian political situation and a demonstration taking place which is ‘“protect[ed]”’ by the French troops. Pen went out amongst them and met many captains before being returned home very happy. Pantaleone is exiled. She asks why Massimo d’Azeglio argues against Rome as the capital and criticises Lord John and Lord Cowley (Henry Wellesley, 1st Earl Cowley), saying that ‘Napolean’s position in France is hard enough’. She discusses Sophia Eckley taking out a book of poems eventually as is her youngest brother. They (the Brownings) have seen an advertisement for Agnes Tremorne and are very pleased by it. She makes some comments on grammar and on Anthony Trollope. Carlo Matteucci is coming to Rome. Barrett Browning has been ‘long in writing’ as she is working on some ‘Italian lyrics’ and is busy with Pen’s lessons with the Abbé as well. She has met Lady Annabella Noel lately, Lord Byron’s grand-daughter and Lady Marion Alford, the Marquis of Northampton’s daughter, who she was less impressed by but whom Hatty (Harriet Hosmer) calls ‘divine’. Barrett Browning asks what Blagden thinks of the photographs she is sending. She says not to apologise for Charles Christopher Bowen and that Robert Browning was ‘vexed’ that Blagden thought her ‘friends not good enough for his acquaintance’.

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 29, pp. 26–32 (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2023). It is transcribed online via The Brownings' Correspondence project, numbered 4853.</value>
