<value>This is a letter written from Rome, Italy. Barrett Browning discusses ‘the G business’ which she is annoyed by (a possible proposal of marriage made to Blagden by Dr Gryzanowski despite seemingly being interested in Annettee Bracken). She says Annette has called and looks well. Barrett Browning cannot understand Dr Gryzanowski. Robert Browning is ‘is furious of course’ but won’t say anything. She says Anette should not have allowed the going to Empoli and expresses confusion regarding Gryzanowski’s motives. Barrett Browning says she liked Dr Gryzanowski so feels pained on his account. Blagden is worth a ‘hecatomb of such men’. She moves on to discuss Agnes Tremorne which has been commented favourably on by Mrs Procter which pleases Barrett Browning. Mrs Procter doesn’t give her approval easily and ‘has the habit of London literary judgments’. Barrett Browning says she wishes she had forced herself on Blagden’s proofs. She consoles her not to deprecate and that a first book is never to be her best as is ‘experience is bought’. She says ‘there is not much’ to Miss Brown’s verses. She is also disappointed by Massimo d’Azeglio’s pamphlet. She comments on the Italian political situation and the Pope. She discusses the merits of Dell’Ongaro as a translator. It would be beneath him and their politics don’t align. She will try her hand at Italian prose one day. She is happy Blagden likes the photo of Robert Browning and is grateful for the picture of Kate Field but also wanted one of Blagden. She says ‘Robert is out or wd send love to any extremity’ and comments on the Bowens.

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 29, pp. 48–51 (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2023). It is transcribed online via The Brownings' Correspondence project, numbered 4861.</value>
