Barrett Browning congratulates Blagden heartily on her positive review in The Athenæum. She comments vaguely on the effect of literature and their respective works on women. She asks Blagden to tell her of all the notices. She continues to be annoyed by Grisonowsky who loves Annette but proposed to Blagden. She asks for Blagden’s opinion on Lytton’s latest poem Elisabetta Sirani and gives her own negative opinion. She comments on the Pope and political situation in Italy but tells Blagden to keep it in confidence. Pen is learning to fence. She asks whether Blagden will take an apartment in Florence. Barrett Browning is anxious about how she will obtain a copy of Agnes Tremorne. Robert Browning was at the Duchess de Grammont’s reception. Hetty (Harriet Hosmer) has been injured after being thrown from her horse. She praises Mr Story’s new work (‘the Nubian Sybil’) as well as latest instalment of Anthony Trollope’s Framley Parsonage. She makes further comments on the Grisonowksy affair: ‘What a fate you have in the Lyttonish kind of men’. She also makes reference to Mrs Kinney’s possible pregnancy and sends her love to Sophie Cottrell. She asks Blagden to tell her of Grisonowsky and says she wishes she were going with Blagden to Siena in the summer but they are going to France where she will meet her sister Arabel. She says ‘Robert is out or would send his love. He was outrageous on the G. affair–’.
