Barrett Browning mentions that French troops to be withdrawn from the Roman states. She makes sarcastic comments on Mr Massy Dawson with whom she disagreed regarding politics. She was visited by ‘a crowd of people’ ‘all at once’ the day prior which caused her to become weak and she is not fully recovered: Mrs Bruen, Miss Sewell (Amy Herbert) and Lady Juliana Knox. She describes Miss Sewell whom she ‘liked’ as follows: ‘She is a very nice, gentle-looking, cheerful, respectable sort of .. single-womanish person (decidedly single) of the olden type,—very small, slim, quiet, with the nearest approach to a poky bonnet possible in this sinful generation’. The Eckleys are back in Florence which Barrett Browning says Blagden will ‘be very much astonished at’. The Brownings will not return ‘till deep in May’ then they will go onto France. She says she would prefer Dall’Ongaro as a translator. She very much wants a copy of Agnes Tremorne and asks Blagden what everyone says regarding it. In her postscript she mentions that Bowring is very ill.

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 29, pp. 64–67 (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2023).
