<value>This is a letter written from Rome, Italy. Barrett Browning says 'letters cross, which is a pity'. She mentions the Storys who do not go to Siena. She says 'I dont send Robert’s love to you my Isa, because he is nearly always away when I write—and I would’nt mock you with the shadow of love–'. She is pleased by further notices of Agnes Tremorne in the Globe. She discusses Lytton's sonnets and then discusses Thackeray to whom she has sent a 'new contribution'. She says 'Then Thackeray says that the Cornhill is “for babes & sucklings,”.

She touches on translation into Italian and says she has seen a funeral sermon in the nazione on Alfredo ed Emilio Savio. She says she has written a poem on the subject, called 'Mother & Poet', which Robert Browning considers to be one of her best and she has sent it to America. She thanks Blagden for information on the political situation, mentioning Cavour, Lord John and Napoleon. She also mentions the 'awful complication in Poland'. Finally, she discusses Garibaldi and asks why Dr Gryzanowski is gone to Ferrara. She says Madame Louise Collet has written about Naples and Garibaldi; though Collet's poetry is 'very poor', Barrett Browning 'should have liked to see her'.

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 29, pp. 93–97 (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2023). It is transcribed online via The Brownings' Correspondence project, numbered 4883.</value>
