Thackeray has written a very kind note after having a poem of hers for four months explaining that he cannot \u2018affront his readers\u2019 chastity by publishing [the] poem\u2019. Regarding this Barrett Browning says: \u2018After all, I dont blame him\u2013 I dare say, it was not judiciously selected for the Cornhill on my part. Only I protest in the abstract against that stifling mask of hypocrisy, behind which consciences are simply suffocated. I am not a coarse woman, nor an unchaste woman.
