<value>This is a letter written from Rome, Italy. Barrett Browning says ‘I take heart & enclose my Italian—with the English poem .. that you may see both. Get Dall’Ongaro to look at it, & give an opinion whether it seems do-able and worth doing’, She explains her translation choices. She understands Dall’Ongaro may be too occupied to look at it and says Agnes Tremorne is a success and most novels aren’t such successes. She comments on the Italian political situation. She asks Blagden to thank Dall’Ongaro for his ‘kind note’ and thanks Blagden for the news from Naples. Thackeray has written a very kind note after having a poem of hers for four months explaining that he cannot ‘affront his readers’ chastity by publishing [the] poem’. Regarding this Barrett Browning says: ‘After all, I dont blame him– I dare say, it was not judiciously selected for the Cornhill on my part. Only I protest in the abstract against that stifling mask of hypocrisy, behind which consciences are simply suffocated. I am not a coarse woman, nor an unchaste woman. Let me say it– But the fear of plain words goes with the non-practise of plain virtues’.

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 29, pp. 97–99 (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2023). It is transcribed online via The Brownings' Correspondence project, numbered 4884.</value>
