<value>This is a letter written from Rome, Italy. This is an incomplete/fragmentary letter. Barrett Browning says Robert Browning has not finished reading Agnes Tremorne and she will allow him to express his opinion. She says: 'I have a few passing criticisms, though he considers your style at least as good as Anthony Trollope’s' and tells Blagden not to think 'the delay, the slowness, a proof of indifference'. She laments Robert Browning's poor reading habits.

She says he spends his mornings working on his sculptures in clay: ' And really he has brought me a most beautiful little torso of a Venus after the antique', and praises his skills. She mentions Hatty (Harriet Hosmer) who would be happy with Blagden and Florence though Barrett Browning says she thinks 'a summer at Siena' would be better for both Hosmer and Blagden. She mentions Blagden's publisher, Smith, Elder & Co., leaving out a scene in Agnes Tremorne, which Barrett Browning considers an 'insolence'. She says her sister Arabel enjoyed Agnes Tremorne and was 'not struck ... by an impropriety'. She mentions Charles Synge Christopher Bowen in reference to his review of Agnes Tremorne and discuses Pen and an event he attended at the French embassy in the final paragraph of the letter.

This letter has been transcribed in 'The Brownings' Correspondence', vol. 29, pp. 112–114 (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 2023). It is transcribed online via The Brownings' Correspondence project, numbered 4890.</value>
